Volotea strike compensation in Europe.
Are you qualified for it? How much can you obtain? What constitutes the rules?
Numerous passengers do not know that strikes are not always deemed extraordinary circumstances. If the Volotea staff (not the airport crew) decide to strike, causing flight delays or cancellations, passengers may be eligible to receive flight compensation from Volotea. This is applicable to all passengers on eligible flights. Moreover, passengers have a right to care if their flight is delayed or cancelled due to an airline staff strike.
Strike compensation can be claimed by the passengers themselves or through a flight compensation agency.

1. Volotea Strike Compensation
The requirements to be eligible for Volotea strike compensation are straightforward.
The flight must have been subject to delay or completely cancelled:
- The flight delay must be at the very least 3 hours, counted from when the aeroplane doors are opened at the destination, permitting passengers to leave. If the delay extends 3 hours or more beyond the planned arrival time, passengers may be qualified for flight delay compensation.
- The flight cancellation must be last-minute. A last-minute cancellation is when a flight is cancelled 0-14 days before the scheduled departure date. In these instances, you may have the right to claim Volotea flight cancellation compensation (in addition to Volotea refund for cancellation).
In essence, it’s not a specific compensation for Volotea strikes (such compensations don’t exist in Europe), but rather compensation for delays or cancellations.
This rule applies to all Volotea flights to, within, and from Europe.
What happens if you miss your Volotea connection?
If it’s a secured connection, you will be booked on another flight free of charge. Even though Volotea is a budget airline, it offers protected connecting flights (Volotea Connect). Volotea flight connections are covered by the Dohop Service.
When you have a self-transfer flight with Volotea, it’s important to understand that you won’t be provided a new flight in the event of a missed connection. This is because you arranged this connection yourself, and it falls outside the coverage of the Dohop Service.
However, in both situations, you may be entitled to flight compensation for that particular disrupted flight (not for the whole journey).

1.1 Extraordinary Circumstances
Remember that airline employee strikes don’t fall under extraordinary circumstances. Likewise, mechanical faults or insufficient crew are not categorised as extraordinary circumstances.
Yet, airlines often attribute a delay or cancellation to extraordinary circumstances where there may be none. In case of flight disturbance, it’s always wise to approach the airline for clarity.
Airlines might wrongfully declare the cause of the delay or cancellation as extraordinary circumstances to evade the payment of compensation. As such circumstances excuse them from the responsibility of compensation, airlines tend to favour them.
Hence, it is crucial to verify the reasons given by the airline and not blindly accept them. It is always recommended to thoroughly check every information related to flight compensation and refunds.

1.2 Right to Care
While experiencing a longer wait due to a delay or cancellation, you have a right to care.
You are entitled to complimentary services under certain conditions. For instance, a wait time of three hours or more at the airport may make you eligible for a complimentary meal and drink. Further, if the delay stretches beyond three hours during late hours, you might qualify for free lodging and airport transfers.
As per the law, these services are mandatory for Volotea to provide to its passengers based on the duration of their wait. If you have not received any assistance, it is suggested to reach out to Volotea’s representatives at the airport.

What is the estimated timeframe for receiving compensation?
Generally, the process spans over a period of 2-3 months. Of late, there have been increasing instances of the process extending further, especially when you make the claim by yourself and the airline decides to overlook your claim.
It’s not a speedy process, thus it’s natural for it to take some time.

These amounts are dictated by the EU regulations.

When your destination is within the EU/UK:
€250
If the distance of your flight is

3.1 Volotea Voucher Refund or Cash?
Several airlines propose vouchers as a substitute for compensation.
This is a widespread practice among airlines, as it helps them save costs compared to providing cash repayments and compensation. However, you have the right to refuse the voucher and demand a refund in cash or via bank transfer instead. Airline compensations and refunds should be issued in cash or by bank transfer, and it’s crucial to always request this method.
This is a regulatory requirement in the EU.
